Is It Better To Glue Or Float Hardwood Floors?

Categories : Uncategorized

Engineered solid wood comes in two forms: floating and glue-down. Both these installing options have some benefits and drawbacks. Let’s review the advantages and disadvantages of these flooring types so you can decide which one is better for you.

Pros Of The Glow-Down Hardwood Flooring

• Glow-down flooring sounds and feels like a real hardwood as the way it’s installed doesn’t allow hollow space under the floor. There, you won’t hear a hollow sound or feel it moving when walking on the floor. This could be due to a problem with the floating flooring if they are not installed perfectly.

• Besides, glow-down flooring doesn’t require a vapor barrier as itself acts as a barrier. This leads to a lower installation cost.

• Because glow-down flooring moves less, it can be installed on the subfloors that are not perfectly prepared and flattened.

Cons Of The Glow-Down Hardwood Flooring

• It is difficult to install and therefore is not considered as DIY-friendly flooring. You may have to hire a professional to do the job for you which increases the installation cost.

• If you decide to replace the flooring, they are difficult to remove and the planks are not reusable.

Pros Of The Floating Hardwood Flooring

• The floating planks are easier to install. All you need is to click tongs and grooves to interlock section without any fastener. In this way, installing the floor can be finished within a weekend and you can Do It Yourself without having to pay an expert.

• It’s easier to tear down a floating floor too. They are also easier to maintain and repair as you only need to replace affected planks in the case of damage.

• They can be installed in high-humidity rooms such as an underground basement or attic and shrink/expand to compensate for fluctuation in the temperature.

Cons Of The Floating Hardwood Flooring

• They shift more and feel spongy if they are not perfectly installed. They may also make a hollow sound if there is an issue in the process of installation and optimization.

• As they require an even surface, most of the time they require a separate underlayment. This adds to the cost and time of installation.
